I am off on one- so bear with me!
My older daughter is staying at my parents at the moment. she is a very VERY vulnerable young lady and so she goes to the YMCA holiday playscheme and an extra £50 per day is paid so she can have a f-t 1:1 helper.
Well, I dont know if you have dodgey weather where you are but it is SNOWING, SLEETING, ICEY and soaking wet and freezing cold.
Apparently she spent all afternoon doing "burma bridge" the children complained and went in, they were offered the chance to change, Gemma just cant do this because of her, um, well lets just say her vulnerableness stops her changing clothes without support.
So then what they do is take them to a MARQUEE on the lawn where she sits on the grass.
She is one of the older children there.
Her coat was soaked through (it is shower proof, long and padded) There were 6 yr olds shivvering soaked in there with rain coats on.
the YMCA leader is wearing an all weather rain, wind coat and even they are soaked.
Gemma got home and Mum said she was soaked through- even her underwear was soaked.
I have rung up the young chappy who was leading today and asked what the hell was he doing talking a load of children in the sleet and snow across a rope bridge over a lake in the ice!
I have asked for a copy of the risk assessment for these weather conditions and burma bridge activity and funnily enough I havent received one.
Bless him, he didnt sound old enough to shave.
He said that she did have the chance to change- I asked where Gems 1:1 was and he just didnt know!
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAaagh!
then he said "sorry" and I said "sorry for what one moment ago these activities were fine and now they are not?" "well, no, you are obviously upset about it"
"YES! So does sorry mean that you will do the same in the sleet and snow tomorrow?"
"err No, Bye"
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAGH!how to be a velvet bulldoser

This is just unbelievable Jenni. Being outside all day in the freezing cold and being we all day is horrendous for any child, let a lone a vulnerable child who is unable to get herself out of the situation. I wonder if all the other parents know what their children have been subjected to all day? Is there any one in charge you can speak to to find out where the person who was supposed to be looking out for her was? I'm fuming for you.

Hi Jenni,
This is so not on and the activity as you rightly stated has placed Gemma and the other children at risk. If you can muscle up the energy, I would suggest writing a letter of complaint to the YMCA holiday scheme and cc a copy to Gemma's care manager/social worker. It is my guess that they either do not have a risk management contingency plan for bad weather or it was not followed.
Love,

o Jenni hope u are able to speak to someone much more senior tomorrow as I expect there's no one available now? Meanwhile, think of Gemma safe and cosy now and in the warm with your parents. What a horrible thing to happen. I'm not at all surprised you feel upset ~ things like this just shouldn't happen, tomorrow you need some answers and firm assurance this will not happen again. i also think every family should make enquiries via the county council and hope that you get some very clear answers about your little lady's 1:1 support. Take care Jenni xx Love and hugs ~ Liz xx

Sounds like good old fashioned stupidity to me! The word is neglect which is a form of abuse. Disgusting way to treat children who should have been tucked up indoors drawing or something else recreational. As for the extra £50 for 1-1, well, theft as well!
Hope that Gemma suffers no ill effects from this, or any of the other children.

I`m with Eleanor on this one - downright crass stupidity. They`ll be lucky to escape without raging colds & coughs. Beggars belief. Kathleen x
